Hi, I’m Colleen.
I’m a film photographer living in San Francisco's Sunset neighborhood, specializing in motherhood, newborn, and family portraiture. I’ve been making images across various industries, from weddings to advertising campaigns, for over a decade. I built most of my business making images for brands that sell a consumer product, but I’ve always had this feeling in my gut that the work I was making wasn’t heartwork - you know, the type of work that fills your love buckets up, that has real and meaningful impact, and is ultimately valued and cherished by the people it was made for.
A few years ago, I found a box of 4×6 photos from my childhood. Touching, feeling, and, as weird as it sounds, smelling them made me feel nostalgic for a time when things like photos were tangible and not just little rectangles of pixels stored on a cell phone. I didn’t know it at the time, but that moment would start a slow and steady evolution of my work as a photographer.
Then I became a mother, which upended everything I ever thought was true about my identity, who I was as a person, and especially as a photographer and creative. Suddenly, I found myself feeling almost obsessive about wanting to document my journey into matrescence, the changes to my body, the raw tenderness of the early days of being postpartum, and, of course, every precious, cute, and funny moment with my son.
Why I shoot film.
I’m inspired by the authenticity of how real film looks. I feel connected to the analog process, and that’s important to me as an artist — the pauses required to load film give me more time to connect with you and your family. Not being able to see if I “got the shot” lets me slow down and be intentional about what moments I want to press the shutter for.
Seeking what’s real and true.
If you're the kind of person who likes the idea of making a family album, printing your photos instead of letting them just live on your phone, who’s learning to accept the mess and rawness of raising small children instead of hiding it, who respects craft and experience over what's quick and generic, I want to get to know you and photograph whatever season you’re in — maternity, postpartum, newborn, toddlers, multi-generational family photos, I’m here for it all.
If any of this resonates with you, let’s connect.
